Bueng Ta Khan is a large catch and release fishing pond just outside of Rayong city that is known for its large Pla Sawai catfish. If you’re in Pattaya or passing through Rayong, this place is definitely worth checking out.
The large, picturesque, lake is tucked behind a temple and surrounded by rice fields. To get to the car park, you must first drive alongside the lake along a narrow dirt road. Adjacent to the car park is a rather large, Thai style restaurant with a floating pontoon in front which consists of several fishing pegs. This pontoon and and the adjoining concreted area is where all of the fishing is done.
At 250thb per rod, Bueng Ta Khan is a little more pricey than some of the other fishing parks in the area, however, the abundance of large, healthy fish, makes the price worth while. Outside bait is forbidden and the owner issues you with a bag of breadcrumbs and some sliced bread as hookbait upon entry.
The park is open all day and well into the night. I have stayed until past 10pm on several occasions and there were always others still fishing once I had packed up for the evening. Despite being open all day, the large catfish are fairly inactive through the daytime. The place really comes to life as the sun starts to set, and the evening drop in pressure and temperature triggers the larger fish to feed, and feed they do.
The lake can get busy in the evenings, especially on weekends as the locals descend on the place to eat and drink while they await the sound of their reel screaming.
